Common questions about 548 / Primrose Armor Plate w/ Moly D Chain & Cable Lubricant
-
What is Primrose 548 chain and cable lubricant used for?
Primrose 548 Armor Plate with Moly-D is an oil-type lubricant for chains, sprockets, cables and wire rope. Its Moly-D plates internal and external parts to prevent metal-to-metal contact, reducing friction, heat, stress and wear, while rust inhibitors form a barrier against water and moisture and corrosion inhibitors protect against moisture, acids and chemicals. Primrose says it increases the life of chains, sprockets and cables.
-
Do I need to heat 548 before putting it on wire rope?
Primrose 548 Armor Plate with Moly-D does not need to be heated, unlike many cable lubricants: apply it to wire rope and cable straight from the container. Primrose calls heating cable lubricants a very dangerous practice. Once applied, it penetrates to the core and plates the strands, wires and core, and Primrose says regular use extends the life of cables and sheaves.
-
What kinds of chains and equipment can I use 548 on?
Primrose 548 Armor Plate with Moly-D can be used on roller, double roller, triple roller, quadruple, hoist, drive, drag, leaf, conveyor, hi-speed and detachable chains, plus sprockets, cables and wire rope. Primrose lists applications including logging, plywood mills, lumber, paper, pulp and wood plants, mines, oil drilling rigs, elevators, grain elevators, breweries, bottling plants, combines, corn pickers and cotton gins.
-
Is 548 a grease or an oil, and what viscosity is it?
Primrose 548 Armor Plate with Moly-D is an oil-type chain and cable lubricant: Primrose says it is composed of highly refined lubricating oils, and its data sheet gives no NLGI grease grade. Typical viscosity is 2500 SUS (Saybolt Universal Seconds) at 100 F and 150 SUS at 210 F, with a viscosity index of 97 and a typical pour point of 5 F.
-
Will 548 drip or fling off my chains?
Primrose 548 Armor Plate with Moly-D chain and cable lubricant is made to resist dripping and fling-off. Primrose says its cohesive and adhesive additives reduce dripping and splattering and make the oil cling tightly to chains, rollers, pins, links and cables, and its stabilizing agents keep it from thinning out or throwing out under severe conditions.
