Grease Products questions and answers

  • What NLGI grade grease should I use?

Use the NLGI grade your equipment calls for: a lower number means a softer grease, and 327-2, 357-2, 311 Blue Max No. 2 and 777 Syn-O-Gen #2 are No. 2. Softer grades include 327-1 (No. 1), which the 327 TDS names for subfreezing pumpability and automatic lubrication, 311 No. 1 and No. 0, and 777 #0. Primrose recommends 327C (No. 3) for heavy duty construction and mining equipment above freezing.

  • What is Moly-D, and which Primrose greases have it?

Moly-D is the moly compound in Primrose 327-1, 327-2, 327C and 357-2 Armor Plate, 777 Syn-O-Gen and 555 open gear grease. The 327 TDS calls it solubilized, unlike the black solid molybdenum disulfide in other moly greases, which Primrose says is why Armor Plate is rich green. Primrose reports 327 Armor Plate with Moly-D lasted 18 times as long as the same grease with molysulfide in oxidation stability tests.

  • Which Primrose grease should I use where water keeps washing the grease off?

Primrose 555 Armor Plate with Moly-D and 558 Enviro Blend both list less than 1% water washout (ASTM D1264). 555 is an open gear grease that Primrose calls waterproof, even against salt water, and useful underwater; 558, a rudder stalk and valve grease for valves and bearings in contact with water, can be applied to wet or submerged surfaces. Primrose rates 327-2, 357-2 and 777 Syn-O-Gen water resistance excellent.

  • Should I use a synthetic grease like 777 Syn-O-Gen or a conventional grease?

Choose 777 Syn-O-Gen, a 100% synthetic Primrose grease, for wide temperature ranges: Primrose gives it an operating range of minus 40 F to 550 F, versus the 0 F to 300 F that mineral oil based greases typically cover. Primrose says this non-melt grease stays pumpable in arctic service where other greases do not, and its listed uses include freezer bearings, brick and tile kilns and lithographic ovens.

  • Which Primrose open gear lubricant should I use, 555 or 556?

Use 555 Armor Plate on exposed gears, racks and cables, and 556 Emerald Shield on large shrouded open gears needing a flowing lubricant. 555 is an adhesive NLGI No. 2 extreme pressure grease for heavy, generally slow-moving or stationary equipment. 556 is an extremely viscous synthetic oil (16,000 cSt at 40 C), suited to ball mills with automatic lubrication, that Primrose says will not build up on gears or shrouds.
