Transportation questions and answers

  • Which Primrose diesel additive should I use in winter, 5007 or 5757?

Use 5757 Winter Klenz ID for winter diesel: its Primrose data sheet lists anti-gel, flow improver and anti-icing additives, and none of those appear on the 5007 Power Klenz ID data sheet. Both clean and prevent internal diesel injector deposits (IDID) and contain the Xtreme Torque cetane improver. 5757 is recommended at 1:1000 in ULSD; 5007 is used at 1:250 for the first two tanks, then 1:1000.

  • What is the difference between 405C and 5007 diesel additive?

405C Power-Master Plus is a concentrated cetane improver used at 1:3000, while 5007 Power Klenz ID is engineered to clean and prevent internal diesel injector deposits (IDID) in high pressure common rail engines and is used at 1:1000 for maintenance. 405C typically raises cetane 3 to 4 numbers; 5007 raises it 4 numbers in responsive fuels at its optimum treat rate. Both list lubricity and corrosion protection among their benefits.

  • Should I run 234 Odyssey 3400 or 229 Odyssey 3000 15W-40 in my diesel trucks?

Go by model year: Primrose particularly recommends 234 Odyssey 3400 (API CK-4/SN) for heavy duty diesels burning ultra-low sulfur diesel in 2017 and newer on-highway models, Tier 4 non-road engines and earlier engines calling for API CK-4, and 229 Odyssey 3000 (API CJ-4/SN) for 2007 to 2016 model year heavy duty diesels with emission after-treatment. Both are SAE 15W-40 synthetic blend oils with Moly-D.

  • What grease should I use on fifth wheels, king pins and wheel bearings?

Primrose recommends 327-2 and 357-2 Armor Plate with Moly-D, both NLGI No. 2 non-melt greases, for heavy duty uses that include fifth wheels, king pins, ball joints and wheel bearings. For automatic lube systems or pumping at subfreezing temperatures, the 327 data sheet points to the softer 327-1 (NLGI No. 1), and the 357 data sheet says 357-2 still retains excellent pumpability at sub-freezing temperatures.

  • What should I put in my fleet's bulk diesel tank for bacteria or sludge: MP8, 3895 or 410?

Primrose MP8 Microbicide kills bacteria and fungi in fuel, while 3895 Concentrated Fuel Tank Cleaner (designed for steel storage tanks) and 410 Hi-Flame disperse the sludge and water emulsions that typically clog strainers, nozzles and lines. MP8 is for commercial and industrial use only, and Primrose warns it may exceed the federal 15 ppm sulfur standard for 2007 and newer diesel motor vehicles and 2011 and newer nonroad engines. Always follow the product label directions.
