Engine Oil questions and answers

  • What is the difference between 229 Odyssey 3000 and 234 Odyssey 3400 15W-40?

229 Odyssey 3000 meets and exceeds API CJ-4/SN and is particularly recommended for 2007 to 2016 model year heavy duty diesels with emission after-treatment, while 234 Odyssey 3400 meets and exceeds API CK-4/SN and is particularly recommended for 2017 and newer on-highway and Tier 4 non-road diesels, and for earlier diesels that call for API CK-4 oil. Both are SAE 15W-40 synthetic blend moly motor oils made by Primrose.

  • Can I use Primrose Odyssey 15W-40 motor oil in a gasoline engine?

Yes, Primrose recommends both 229 Odyssey 3000 and 234 Odyssey 3400 for gasoline and most diesel engines in light to heavy duty service, and automobiles are on the application list for each. Both are SAE 15W-40 (229 meets and exceeds API CJ-4/SN, 234 meets and exceeds API CK-4/SN), so confirm your owner's manual calls for 15W-40 and a spec the oil meets.

  • Are Primrose Odyssey motor oils full synthetic, and can I mix them with the oil already in my engine?

229 Odyssey 3000 and 234 Odyssey 3400 are synthetic blend moly motor oils, not full synthetics: Primrose blends pure synthetic hydrocarbon base stocks with severely hydrocracked base stocks and adds Primrose Moly-D to reduce engine wear. Primrose says each is fully compatible with most other synthetic and conventional mineral oil based motor oils, so in most cases they can be mixed.

  • What is the difference between 480M and a Primrose motor oil like 229 or 234?

480M Armor Plate with Moly-D Ultragard is an oil supplement, not a motor oil: it is mixed into an existing oil, 1 part 480M to 10 parts gasoline or diesel engine oil, to strengthen the oil film and add Moly-D protection. 229 Odyssey 3000 and 234 Odyssey 3400 are SAE 15W-40 motor oils that already contain Primrose Moly-D. 480M is compatible with all petroleum and PAO based oils.

  • Can I add 480M to gear oil, hydraulic oil or a transmission?

480M can be mixed into oils besides engine oil: 1:20 in hydraulic, air compressor, rock drill and manual transmission oil and AGMA 1 and 2EP gear oil, and 1:15 or 1:10 in the other gear oil grades Primrose lists, depending on the ISO, AGMA or SAE grade. Primrose says 480M is not designed for fluids with special frictional characteristics, such as automatic transmission, wet clutch or friction drive fluids.
