Tractor questions and answers

  • Which Primrose diesel additive should I use in my tractor in winter, 5007 or 5757?

Use Primrose 5757 Winter Klenz ID for winter diesel: its data sheet lists anti-gel, flow improver and anti-icing additives, none of which appear on the 5007 Power Klenz ID data sheet. Both clean and prevent injector deposits (IDID) and comply with federal low sulfur content requirements for nonroad (off-road) diesel engines. Primrose recommends 1:1000 for routine use of either, though 5007 starts at 1:250 for the first two tanks.

  • What NLGI grade Armor Plate grease should I use on my tractor and farm equipment?

For general greasing, use an NLGI No. 2 grease such as Primrose 327-2 or 357-2 Armor Plate with Moly-D; both data sheets list farms among their applications. Primrose calls 357-2 a medium No. 2 that still retains excellent pumpability at sub-freezing temperatures, while the 327 data sheet names the softer 327-1 (NLGI No. 1) for subfreezing pumpability and automatic lubrication. Follow the grade your equipment manual calls for.

  • Which 15W-40 motor oil should I use in my tractor, 229 Odyssey 3000 or 234 Odyssey 3400?

Primrose particularly recommends 234 Odyssey 3400 (API CK-4/SN) for heavy duty diesels burning ultra-low sulfur diesel in Tier 4 non-road and 2017 and newer on-highway engines, and earlier diesels calling for API CK-4 oil. 229 Odyssey 3000 (API CJ-4/SN) is particularly recommended for 2007 to 2016 heavy duty diesels with emission after-treatment. Both are 15W-40 synthetic blends listing tractors and combines among their applications; check your engine manual.

  • What is the difference between 323 Gin Kleen and 623 Spindle Bright for cotton pickers?

Primrose 323 Gin Kleen is a cotton picker spindle grease, while 623 Spindle Bright is a lubricity concentrate you mix into the picker's water tanks. 323 is an NLGI 00 grease for late model cotton pickers with spindles designed for grease lubrication. Mix 623 at 1 quart per 50 gallons of water or more; Primrose says it helps prevent spindle lint build-up and moistener pad blockage.

  • What should I use to lubricate combine and corn picker chains?

Primrose 548 Armor Plate with Moly-D chain and cable lubricant lists combines, corn pickers, grain elevators and cotton gins among its applications, and is used on roller, drive, drag, conveyor and other chains, plus sprockets, cables and wire rope. It is made from highly refined lubricating oils, and Primrose says its cohesive and adhesive additives reduce dripping and splattering and make it cling tightly to chains, rollers, pins and links.
